Because specialist technical translations must always be accurate, objective and cohesive, with unambiguous use of terminology, we use specialist translation programs to help us translate. These CAT (computer-aided translation) tools have their own inbuilt terminology checkers that translators use to maintain consistency and ensure that the translation is unequivocal and comprehensible.
The principle

CAT tools work with a translation memory, a type of database which is saved on the translator’s hard drive, or on a server online. Every sentence that the translator translates is saved into this translation memory (TM).
If the same sentence occurs again, or a sentence occurs that is similar in terms of structure and phrasing, the previous translation and the corresponding original will display in a special window in the CAT tool. This allows several translators to work on one translation at the same time.
